The taxonomic status of Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea gigas has long been a matter of controversy. Morphological and physiological similarities, as well as homogeneity in allelic frequencies on allozymes between the populations of the two taxa, lead most authors to suggest to regroup of the two within the same species. European and Asian populations of C. gigas and C. angulata have been studied using microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA markers. The analysis of genetic distances and the distribution of allelic and haplotype frequencies revealed a differentiation between the populations of C. gigas and C. angulata. European newts (genus Triturus) are widely studied, but their phylogeny is not yet unambiguously resolved. Fragments of mitochondrial DNA experiencing different rates of evolution (the ATPase and 12S rRNA genes) were sequenced in order to test a phylogenetic hypothesis derived from biochemical and behavioral data. Well-supported branches of the existing phylogeny gained support in our study. Understanding muscle cell in disease and health is an unfinished process. Following the lead of Jaime Alvarez, I have had the opportunity of working on two complementary approaches to this field. One is the study of muscle cell surface molecules. Both synaptic muscle molecules, such as the asymmetric form of acetylcholinesterase, and extrasynaptic molecules, such as the extracellular matrix proteoglycans, are regulated by the motor nerve activity. This illustrates one of Jaime's teachings: cell phenotypes are a dynamic process that reflects the influence of other cells (<A HREF="#0">Alvarez, 2001</A>). To estimate the maternal effects of dog breeds using mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) haplotypes in the dogs with several clinical disorders, 600 base pairs of mtDNA D-loop region were amplified from 365 dogs and were determined for mtDNA sequences. The diversity of the 600-bp sequences was classified into 64 haplotypes, including 46 newly discovered haplotypes, and the haplotypes were grouped into four clusters I to IV. None of the previous genetic analysis found significant differences within the Mediterranean. However, a more exhaustive analysis is needed inside this sea. In this sense, we have analyzed the mitochondrial control region sequence variability of three Mediterranean locations: Libya (n = 22), Tunisia (n = 23) and Malta (n = 12). Additionally a sample from the Gulf of Cadiz (n = 24) in the East Atlantic Ocean was also included in the study. The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) mitochondrial cox3/sdh4/pseudo-cox2 gene cluster has previously been identified by heterologous hybridization using a Marchantia polymorpha sdh4 probe. In our present study we used Southern blotting using sdh4 and cox2 probes to show that the sdh4 and cox2 genes are clustered in the mitochondria of potato, soybean and pea. Northern blotting revealed cotranscription of sdh4 and cox2 in potato but not in cauliflower, indicating that these genes are not clustered in cauliflower. Mitochondrial mutations are responsible for at least 1% of the cases of hereditary deafness, but the contribution of each mutation has not yet been defined in African-derived or native American genetic backgrounds. A total of 203 unselected hearing-impaired patients were screened for the presence of the mitochondrial mutation A1555G in the 12S rRNA gene and mutations in the tRNA Ser(UCN) gene in order to assess their frequency in the ethnically admixed Brazilian population. Patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation were used to analyse the population genetic structure of southwestern Indian Ocean green turtle (Chelonia mydas) populations. Analysis of sequence variation over 396 bp of the mtDNA control region revealed seven haplotypes among 288 individuals from 10 nesting sites in the Southwest Indian Ocean.
